Driveway Placement: No Permit Required
The vast majority of our customers place the trailer in their driveway. Private property placement — your driveway, your yard, your job site — does not require a permit in any of the municipalities we serve.
Our trailers are designed to fit in standard residential driveways. When you book, we'll confirm placement details and make sure there's enough clearance for delivery.
Street Placement: Check With Your Municipality
If the trailer needs to sit on a public street or right-of-way — because your driveway is too short, too steep, or blocked — you may need a permit from your city or township.
Permit requirements vary significantly across Southeast Michigan:
- Some cities require a permit for any container placed in the right-of-way
- Some townships have no permit requirement but may have placement rules (distance from intersections, required lighting or markings)
- Some municipalities require the rental company to pull the permit; others require the homeowner
The safest approach: call your city or township's public works or building department before booking street placement. Tell them you're renting a dumpster trailer and ask what's required.

When a permit is required for street placement, it typically involves:
- A fee (varies by municipality, usually $25–$100)
- Placement restrictions (distance from fire hydrants, intersections, driveways)
- Required safety markings (reflective cones or lights at night)
- A time limit on how long the container can remain on the street

How to Avoid the Permit Question Entirely
The easiest solution: use your driveway. Here's how to make it work even in tight situations:
Short driveway: We can often position the trailer partially on the apron (the transition between driveway and street) without encroaching on the right-of-way.
Steep driveway: We'll assess this during booking. Some steep driveways work fine; others don't. We'll tell you upfront.
Blocked driveway: If a vehicle is blocking the driveway, move it before delivery. We need a clear path to place the trailer.
Low-hanging trees or wires: Let us know in advance. We can often work around obstacles with advance notice.
What Happens If You Don't Get a Required Permit
If your city requires a permit for street placement and you don't have one, you risk:
- A fine from the city
- Being required to move the container immediately
- Complications with your project timeline
