The garage is where things go to be forgotten. Tools you haven't touched in years, boxes from the last move, broken equipment you were going to fix, seasonal items buried under everything else. It builds up slowly until one day you can't park a car in there anymore.
The good news: with the right approach, you can clear it out in a single weekend.
What You'll Need
- A dumpster trailer (delivered Friday, picked up Monday)
- Help from at least one other person
- Boxes or bins for sorting
- A few hours of uninterrupted time
Step 1: Pull Everything Out
This is the most important step and the one most people skip. Pull everything out of the garage and into the driveway. Yes, everything.
This forces you to make a decision about every single item instead of working around things and leaving the hard decisions for later. It also lets you see what you actually have.
Step 2: Sort Into Piles
With everything in the driveway, sort into four piles:
Keep: Tools you actually use, seasonal items you need, sports equipment in good condition, items with a clear purpose in your life.
Sell: Power tools, sporting goods, lawn equipment, and other items in good condition with resale value. Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist move garage items fast.
Donate: Items in good condition that you don't need but someone else could use.
Trash: Broken tools, dried-out paint cans, old chemicals, worn-out equipment, boxes of stuff you haven't opened since you moved in.
Be honest with yourself. If you haven't used it in two years and you don't have a specific plan to use it, it goes in the trash or donate pile.
Step 3: Load the Dumpster
The trash pile goes straight into the dumpster. Don't overthink it — if you've decided it's trash, load it.
Common garage cleanout items we haul:
- Broken tools and equipment

- Cardboard boxes and packing materials
- Worn-out furniture stored in the garage
- Old appliances and electronics (note: electronics need separate recycling)
- Dried paint cans (dried latex paint is fine; liquid paint is not)
- Lawn and garden debris
- Old tires (note: we can't haul tires — check local disposal options)
Step 4: Organize What's Left
Once the trash is loaded and the donations are boxed up, you're left with only what you're keeping. Now organize it:
- Wall-mount tools — Pegboards and wall-mounted tool organizers keep frequently used tools accessible
- Shelving — Heavy-duty shelving units keep bins and boxes off the floor
- Ceiling storage — Overhead storage racks work well for seasonal items
- Label everything — If it goes in a bin, label the bin
What Size Dumpster Do You Need?
For most garage cleanouts, the 15-yard trailer is the right call. It handles the volume of a typical two-car garage comfortably.
If your garage has been accumulating for 10+ years, you have a large workshop with significant scrap material, or you're also clearing out an adjacent storage area, consider the 20-yard for extra room.
The One-Weekend Plan
Friday: Dumpster delivered. Spend the evening pulling everything out.
Saturday: Sort everything into piles. Load the trash. Box up donations.
Sunday: Organize what's left. Drop off donations. Enjoy your clean garage.
Monday: We pick up the dumpster.
