Estimate shingle tear-off weight by roof area, type, and layer count.
Start Calculating →Roofing Shingle Debris Weight Calculator
Estimate tear-off weight based on roof size, shingle type, and the number of roofing layers being removed.
- Estimate shingle debris weight by roof area and layer count
- Plan for underlayment, nails, flashing, and decking debris
- Compare the estimate with available dumpster capacity
Calculate Your Roofing Dumpster Size
Enter the estimated surface area of the roof itself, not necessarily the interior living area of the home.

Accepts values from 100 to 20,000 square feet.
What This Estimate Assumes
This estimate assumes:
- One layer of asphalt shingles
- Approximately 300 pounds per roofing square
- A 10% allowance for related tear-off debris
- No large amount of roof decking
- No tile, slate, metal roofing, or other specialty roofing materials
- Debris is reasonably dry
- Roofing debris is not mixed with unrelated construction waste
Your actual load may weigh more or less than this estimate.
Your Roofing Debris May Be Heavier If:
- The roof has two or more shingle layers
- The shingles are heavy architectural or premium shingles
- The debris is wet
- Roof decking or plywood is being removed
- The roof contains rolled roofing
- Ice-and-water membrane is being removed
- The load includes gutters, flashing, wood, or other demolition material
- The roof measurements are inaccurate
- The project includes a garage, porch, addition, or outbuilding
- The roof contains tile, slate, concrete, or other specialty materials
Do not use this calculator for slate, clay tile, concrete tile, metal roofing, asbestos-containing material, or other specialty roof systems. Contact RedArk directly for review.
Does Your Roof Have More Than One Layer?
The calculator's standard result assumes one layer of asphalt shingles.
- If there are two layers, the shingle portion of the load may be approximately twice as heavy.
- If there are three layers, the shingle portion may be approximately three times as heavy.
Underlayment, nails, and miscellaneous debris do not necessarily increase at exactly the same rate as the shingle layers. Contact RedArk before booking if the roof has more than one layer.

What Is a Roofing Square?
Roofers measure roof area in squares. One roofing square represents 100 square feet of roof surface.
- 1,000 sq. ft. = 10 roofing squares
- 1,500 sq. ft. = 15 roofing squares
- 2,000 sq. ft. = 20 roofing squares
- 2,500 sq. ft. = 25 roofing squares
The roof surface can be larger than the home's interior floor area because of roof pitch, overhangs, garages, porches, and additions.
Why Roofing Debris Weight Matters
Asphalt shingles are dense construction debris. A trailer can reach its approved weight limit before it appears physically full.
The included-weight allowance is the amount of debris weight covered by the base rental price. Loads exceeding that limit are subject to overweight charges. Safe and legal transport weight is a separate consideration from how full the trailer looks.
How to Obtain Roof Square Footage
You can obtain roof surface area from:
- A roofing contractor's estimate
- An insurance scope
- A roof measurement report
- Building plans
- A professional roof-measurement service
Loading Roofing Debris Safely
- Receive approval before loading shingles.
- Confirm the approved load plan.
- Distribute shingles evenly throughout the trailer.
- Do not pile all shingles at the front, rear, or on one side.
- Keep all debris below the top edge.
- Do not load material above the approved weight.
- Keep the rear doors accessible.
- Do not move the trailer after delivery.
- Keep prohibited materials out of the load.
- Disclose roof decking and mixed construction debris.
- Stop loading and contact RedArk if the trailer reaches the approved limit.
Roofing Dumpster Placement
RedArk places dumpster trailers only on approved driveways or other approved private-property locations.
RedArk does not place trailers:
- On public streets
- In the public right-of-way
- Across public sidewalks
- Where emergency or traffic access is blocked
- In unapproved alleys
- On a surface that RedArk determines is unsuitable
Access, driveway condition, slope, overhead wires, branches, trailer clearance, and pickup access must be reviewed before delivery.
