How Much Does Carpet Weigh?

Carpet may weigh approximately 5 to 20 pounds per square yard, or roughly 0.5 to 2.2 pounds per square foot. One square yard equals 9 square feet. Lightweight carpet generally weighs less than dense plush or commercial carpet. Padding should be calculated separately or included with the carpet. Glue-down carpet may include adhesive and floor-preparation material. Wet carpet can weigh substantially more than dry carpet. Carpet removed in rolls occupies space differently than loosely piled carpet.

Disclaimer: Manufacturer specifications vary. Use the known product weight whenever available.

Estimate Your Carpet Disposal Weight

How would you like to enter the carpet area?
sq. ft.

Enter the original floor area covered by the carpet, not the footprint of the removed carpet pile.

Choose the material that most closely matches the debris. Product weights vary.

Padding weight varies based on foam density, rubber content, felt construction, thickness, moisture, and attached debris.

Material condition

Adhesive and attached debris

Use this for known tack strips, trim, tile, mortar, wood flooring, underlayment, adhesive, or other debris not included in the base carpet estimate.

Keep Carpet and Padding Dry

Carpet, padding, upholstered furniture, insulation, and other absorbent materials can become substantially heavier when exposed to rain or standing water. Wet debris may increase scale weight, disposal costs, odor, and handling difficulty.

  • Keep material indoors until the trailer is ready.
  • Load carpet as close to pickup as practical.
  • Cover the trailer with a properly secured tarp when allowed and safe.
  • Use straps or bungee cords appropriate for the cover.
  • Do not allow a tarp to interfere with safe loading or pickup.
  • Avoid loading material that is saturated with water without contacting RedArk.

Tell RedArk if carpet or padding is wet, water damaged, mold affected, or contaminated before loading.

Carpet Weight Is Only Part of the Disposal Plan

Carpet can occupy a large amount of physical space even when it is relatively light by weight. Plan for organized loading and disclose every material in the debris mix.

  • Cut carpet into manageable strips.
  • Roll sections tightly when practical.
  • Secure rolls before carrying them.
  • Keep tack strips and sharp fasteners separated.
  • Do not allow long rolls to extend above the trailer walls.
  • Keep the trailer load level.
  • Disclose tile, mortar, wood flooring, or other heavy materials.
  • Keep water-damaged material separate when requested.
